Are you in search of a school for your child that stands out from the pack, one with a focus on child-directed, nature-centered, truly engaged education? Where low student to teacher ratios, play based curriculums, warm and welcoming environments, and joyful play blend to create a real love of learning?  Carolina Friends School, a local pillar of education for over 50 years, is just that.

Children ages 3 through 6 start by attending the Carolina Friends Early Schools. There are three Early Schools to choose from, each convenient to Durham: one on their Main Campus, one in Chapel Hill (at the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting, near UNC), and one in Durham (at the Durham Friends Meeting, on Duke's Central Campus). The school is open five days a week, from the end of August through early June, and summer programs are offered. Young children have several options of departure times, with half day leaving at 12:30, 3:15 for full day students, or 5:15 for extended day students. Each day is centered around the needs of young children, with a deliberate balance of active and quiet play, age specific and family-like mixed age groups. Carolina Friends School places a great importance on the need children have to learn to make choices for themselves, and this is reflected throughout their school day. The learning environment is flush with supplies, tools and materials for exploring all their heart desires, be it art, puppets, puzzles, manipulatives, sand and water, blocks, drama, games, science and nature, books, numbers, writing, and more. Children don't just learn in their lovely classrooms but also in the wooded playgrounds, forests and creeks. Each day children gather in large or small groups for reading, storytelling, singing and other activities thoughtfully planned by the teachers, with multiple opportunities for music, movement, guests, and field trips. One constant is a period of shared silence at the beginning of each day called "settling in", where students quietly gather around a candle and get their "bodies and minds ready and centered for the day ahead."

Carolina Friends School draws from tenets of the Quaker faith, but is an independent school with no official religious affiliation and admits children of all faiths and backgrounds. As a Friends school, they place a great deal of importance on community, which is an integral part of the school experience for children, from their early school years to long after they graduate. Friends schools across the nation have been recognized for over 300 years for "fine academics as well as a whole-child approach to moral and intellectual development". More information on the Quaker identity in Friends School can be found here.

Two basic tenets inform Carolina Friends School:
  • in every person there is a light through which wisdom can be accessed, for the benefit of all; and
  • we seek truth by examining diverse perspectives in a gathered community.

Their approach to education is "constructivist; our pedagogy is inquiry-based, valuing multiple perspectives. Thus every member of the community plays a vital role in our continuing search for academic excellence in an environment where values matter." It is an incredibly thoughtful approach to education, as well as diversity. Founded in 1962, Carolina Friends School was one of the first schools in the southeast to pursue a policy of racial integration. The diversity of the student body continues to be a focus to this day, with around 24% of CFS students being of a minority race or ethnicity.  In regards to the school being within reach for all children, Carolina Friends School allocates a "higher percentage of tuition revenue to tuition assistance (over 10%) than many independent schools in this region" with around 24% of their families receiving need-based tuition assistance and admission decisions are made regardless of ability to pay. Creating and maintaining a multicultural and inclusive community in all regards, be it national origin, race, religion, family structure, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socio-economic background,  is paramount to their mission.

Their mission affirms six tenets:
  • Truth continually revealed
  • Seeking peace within ourselves and others
  • Accepting and respecting each individual's uniqueness
  • Spirituality of life
  • Value of simplicity
  • Power of silence

How does the CFS mission translate into daily life in the Early School? There young children learn through "creating deep and lasting relationships with the world around them. As they relate to one another, they develop essential social skills such as an understanding of inclusivity and conflict resolution. The children's learning grows from their engagement with the rich and varied materials offered in their classrooms. In the Early Schools, students, teachers, and families collaborate to set the stage for children to become seekers of knowledge all their lives."
The learning environment has been thoughtfully curated to allow this growth to happen. You have to see the space to truly appreciate the natural lighting, calming colors, quiet spaces, and wooden furniture in the inviting rooms and explore the carefully designed outdoor facilities and forests ripe for wanderlust. Simply schedule a tour to witness it firsthand (tour info below).
Teacher involvement is essential to learning, and following The National Association for the Education of Young Children guidelines, CFS has impressively low student to teacher ratios, averaging 9 to 1. Their class sizes are smaller than most and also fluid, allowing for small groups of 3-4s and Kindergarteners, or a mixed-age larger gathering. All classrooms have at least 2 teachers and a Head Teacher, and in specific locations Extended-Day teachers as well. Classrooms, depending on location, may also benefit from Upper School community service students and work-study students from Duke University. Under the guidance of these world class educators (see more about CFS staff here), the children construct their understanding of the world by experimenting, playing, questioning, discussing, and wondering in CFS's emergent curriculum, which is discussed more here.

Each February around Valentine's Day, The Durham Early School gathers to celebrate You Make a Difference Day. "Parents, teachers, and children are greeted as they walk in with a hug and special tags that say "Who You Are Makes A Difference." After sharing a delicious light breakfast, sometimes made by the children themselves, the community gathers together to reflect on special stories of making a difference as they pass a flame from one candle around the circle. Each of the campuses have their own cherished traditions.

Parents can be counted on truly share what they love about the school they've entrusted their children to. Here is one parent's view of Carolina Friends School, in his own words:
"One of the things that I most appreciate about my children's CFS education is the degree to which they have been encouraged, from age three to eighteen, to think for themselves and take ownership of their intellectual growth. They learn facts, but much more importantly (and more uncommonly) they learn to learn—to enjoy and follow their curiosity, to question, and to vigorously pursue understanding of their questions. Equally important, my children have also been challenged at every stage to consider and develop their values. They have been engaged intellectually and experientially in their own ethical growth. For example, they have regularly participated in developing the ethical guidelines that they and their classmates follow (for example, “don’t hurt each other”)--and have both studied and practiced conflict resolution skills to apply when the guidelines are insufficient! As with their academic education, they have learned not just values, but to question, develop, and value their values."
 - CFS parent Joel  Meyer attends the Durham Friends Meeting and is an
associate professor of environmental toxicology at Duke University.
His son attended CFS from age 3 to 18, and his daughter is in Lower School.

“If you build it, they will come.”  –Field of Dreams
Ever pinned something amazing on pinterest, but known in your heart of hearts you will never actually make it? It's like throwing a coin in a fountain and hoping for the wish to come true, good intentions but no follow through. Well, that's where DurhamKingPin comes in. I'll let owners (and SoDu Parents Posse members) Kylee Sollien and Brent Nester explain...

"Everyone has the intention of building it. We all love those sites where you can keep a running list of your favorite craft inspirations. Hours on end on building the perfect collection of projects you will do when you have the time. Well, you’ve been thinking of building, but if life / lack of tools / not knowing where to start keeps getting in the way. That’s where DurhamKingPin comes to the rescue. We take projects from those sites and make them for you. We will have ten of each project for sale, first come first serve. If you have a specific project in mind, suggest it here info@durhamkingpin.com. And if you miss the first ten of a project up for sale don’t worry. We will be taking custom orders soon and bringing favorite projects back from time to time. Later we will launch larger projects custom built for and installed in your home."

So it's just that simple. Love that kid sized kitchen? Wish you had a bench on your front porch perfect for those spring evenings in Durham? Covet that custom mailbox you saw the other day? Your husband/wife/friend/brother is obsessed with The Walking Dead / Rolling Stones / Penguins and you really want something special for them, and one of a kind, locally made, but you just don't know quite what??? Just get together with artsy Kylee and her super crafty husband Brent and they'll turn those dreams into a reality.

Here are just some examples of crafts Brent and Kylee have put together to get your imagination rolling.

Picture
Wouldn't this cute wooden Christmas tree look great on your dining room table?

Picture
They handmade the name decoration over their son's crib - one of a kind, and he'll have it for life.

Picture
The beer flight station idea is brilliant. Inspired by the photo on the left from pinterest they decided to make their own. It's a great way of keeping which beer you're tasting straight from the rest, simply rest the cap right in front of it. It's solid oak construction with pocket screw joinery, and you can use your own pint glasses or buy six from them. They're selling their custom built beer flight right there on their website and will meet you locally to deliver it.

Let's tell you more about the KingPin family. Brent loves fast cars, woodworking, ice cream, and spending time in the garage.  He has been making items like garage organization systems, potting benches, baby nursery name cutouts and painted walls in a racecar theme, cornhole sets, coat hanger HD antennas, shoe racks, candy holding Christmas trees, and other projects you might see on Pinterest, in Lowe’s Idea Magazine, or in Family Handyman Magazine for friends and family for years. After a good response to selling some of his creations on Craigslist, Brent decided he would like to create his own web store and be a local Durham business. When Brent is working his 9 to 5, he spends it as a Territory Manager for a tool company and calls on Lowe’s and Home Depots from the Triangle to the Coast.

Kylee has an art degree, but doesn’t get to use it during the 9 to 5 as a chemist working in RTP. So, you might see some of her creations as the DurhamQueenPin later on for sale. She’s more than likely the one that will meet you to deliver your item at a coffee shop (just to have another excuse to get coffee). It’s a long story, but she has a chemistry degree and is currently working on her masters. If that didn’t keep Kylee busy enough (work, school, one year old baby just to recap), she’s thinking about adding a blog to the site at some point in the future.

Brent and Kylee have lived in Durham since 2007. Before that they lived in Richmond, VA. It was a classic case of boy-meets-girl-on-eharmony-girl-goes-to-grad-school-in-NC-boy-moves-year-later-girl-leaves-grad-school-they-get-married-and -renovate-a-1977-fixer-upper-house-and-accdently-stay-in-Durham. Now they are here on purpose after moving into another house in Durham (with a bigger garage). They have a one year old baby boy that keeps them pretty busy as well. Actually most days they think he runs the show, and they are just along for the ride!

As you can see, Brent and Kylee have the talent to make you whatever you seek. So dream a little dream, support local Bull City parents, and send them ideas and suggestions for their next project. Send them their way at info@durhamkingpin.com.

Emerge, A Child's Place

Picture
I have never seen a butterfly emerging from a cocoon after a period of dormancy, but I have seen a child blossom after struggling to find himself. So when I saw the butterfly on Emerge's sign, I knew that they truly understood the impact of their therapy. Emerge - A Child's Place is a well respected pediatric occupational and speech therapy clinic conveniently located right here in southern Durham. Their mission is to enhance the lives of the children they serve and the families who love them by providing a fun, nurturing and supportive therapeutic environment. Emerge evaluates and treats a wide variety of children, from infants to teens, whether their needs are simple or complex. Common areas addressed in therapy are:
  • Improving sensory modulation and integration
  • Developing motor skills and coordination
  • Improving communication skills
  • Improving handwriting skills
  • Addressing feeding concerns
  • Enhancing social skills
  • Improving self-esteem
  • Facilitating success in school
  • Improving focus, attention and organization
  • Fostering independence in self-help and play skills
Sometimes children who come to Emerge only need a brief intervention to address an isolated concern, while others need more intensive therapy and necessitate a team approach, including children with autism, learning disabilities and ADHD.

One thing I really appreciate about Emerge is how they not only have one-on-one therapy, but also offer group sessions. My own child was in a feeding group and I saw it's impact firsthand, so I know how not only how valuable they are, but how much the kids love them. Just some of the therapy groups Emerge has include: "Social Sleuths to help older school-aged children (8-12 year olds) build awareness for social cues and navigate social situations", "Picky Eaters and Problem Feeders uses the Sequential-Oral-Sensory approach to safe food exploration in a comfortable and sensory supportive social environment", and "Cool Cats to develop coping strategies for children with anxiety". (Groups offered depend on demand and season, with summertime being the most popular. Go here for the full listing and info on how to apply.) Both group and individual therapy utilize specialized services and customized programs, like Interactive Metronome® and Visualizing and Verbalizing®.

Picture
What sets Emerge apart?
"It is our dedication to parent education." says Brittni M. Winslow, Clinical Director of Occupational Therapy at Emerge (and SoDu member). "We offer parent interpretive conferences to discuss evaluation findings in great detail and to educate and involve parents as a critical part of the treatment team. Our therapists always make the time to correspond with parents regarding treatment plans and recommendations for their child. Therapy is tailored to not only the client’s needs, but the family’s needs as a whole. We understand that therapy is only a small fraction of your child’s week and ultimately success across all of the child’s environments is the goal. Emerge also has a commitment to early intervention and working with young children. We accept clients from birth through 21 years old, with a large majority of our clientele being 5 years old and younger. We have treatment spaces dedicated to working with younger children who may be overwhelmed by larger spaces. The 0-3 years are critical for brain development. Facilitating development thru therapeutic intervention when children are young can yield the greatest outcomes."

I love how our therapist really keeps us in the loop about therapy goals and progress, and I also really appreciate what the clinic does to empower us with information. The website is full of resources and links for parents.  One particular blog post of theirs that might be helpful at this time of year is a list they created of great holiday gifts for children. They have fun and educational toys sorted into the categories of fine motor, visual perceptual, cooperative, gross motor, sensory, language enrichment, imaginative play, and infant/toddler. This added bonus isn't something you'd get just anywhere, but going above and beyond is par for the course at Emerge.

Picture
Can I also mention how great their facility is? The 2,000 square foot open gym space they have for gross motor therapy is larger than any I have ever seen - it's pretty impressive, and according to kids I know that attend Emerge, it's super fun! The waiting room is also pretty spacious, and unlike many, has things to occupy siblings not in therapy, like a train table and play kitchen. Things like that really set Emerge apart - a thoughtful approach to everything.  Take a tour in the video below and see what I mean.

Picture
All of Emerge's therapists are licensed with training in physiology, neurodevelopment and psychology. They participate in ongoing advanced-level continuing education each year so they are able to bring the best in therapeutic practices when working with your child. They truly work as a team, making sure each child has the help they need. I know they deeply care about kids because I spent an hour on the phone with Bonnie Hacker, the Executive Director (another SoDu member!), way before we even became clients. She took time out of her day to help a stranger lost at sea, and pointed me in the right direction. Truly great people here. To find out about the therapists and staff, and see the cute childhood picture each of them chose to go with their bio,  read more here.

Picture
I truly think Emerge is a a place that changes lives, but don't just take my word for it. Here are some words of praise from just some of the families they have helped (and even more in this link to testimonials on their website):

"My two boys have seen tremendous improvements since they started working with the Occupational Therapists at Emerge - A Child’s Place. My oldest son used to sit alone at lunch and play by himself on the playground. Since learning new techniques from his therapist, he has been able to make friends and plays much more easily with others. As a parent, seeing this kind of a change means the world to me!"

"Emerge has also made a huge impact on my life. My son’s therapists have helped me understand why my children react in certain ways, and the therapists have given me a new perspective on how to deal with difficult situations. Their innovative ideas have helped me address every day occurrences in new ways. The support my family has received from Emerge has made life a lot easier for us all."

"I full-heartedly recommend Emerge - A Child’s Place for families. Every member of their staff is AWESOME, and they have the expertise to address all kinds of challenges for children including autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, behavioral problems, and even picky eaters!"

If you are considering occupational or speech therapy for your child but you are not sure if your child needs it at this time, do what I did. Simply call and speak to one of the therapists at Emerge. They will take the time to understand your challenges and offer ideas about how they can help. They also welcome prospective parents to come and check out our clinic space and see the services they offer in person.
You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
Help your child emerge from their cocoon - it may one of the best parenting decisions you ever make.

Carrie Richardson Fry presents cr2f custom art

Looking for some cute custom art? Well, SoDu Parents Posse member, local mom, and artist Carrie Richardson Fry has a great etsy shop, cr2f, that you've gotta see.

Carrie's work is fun, simple, whimsical and unique. The clean lines and pops of bright colors really give her prints a fun feel. At cr2f.etsy.com you'll find a variety of themes in her handmade, custom designed art. A print of Carrie's is a great way to commemorate a vacation,  chronicle the places you live,  celebrate a baby or decorate a kiddo's room   or   show your city or school pride.

Picture
Picture
So where did this all begin for Carrie? "Because I needed art on my walls!" she replies. "I am a sucker for fun colors. I have collected little pieces of art from all over the place, I create paintings from pictures I take and have even been known to frame something not typically framed (like the side of a six pack holder or a postcard advertisement). As I began decorating my home I just keep seeing opportunities to commemorate things that were important to me--my home state of Oklahoma, my husband's home state of Georgia and my daughter's home state of North Carolina. Next came our Italy trip and Italian phrases that will always hold special meaning for us (one is "allora"). I wanted art for my daughter's room, gifts for my friends....and cr2f was made."

Carrie says "I'm happy to custom make a piece for you! I want the artwork in your home to be meaningful and important AND beautiful!"

So now you know where to go for Christmas presents... but it gets even better! Here's Carrie's special coupon code for her etsy shop: just type SoDuROCKS in at checkout. It's good for 10% off all purchases of $20 or more, and is valid through the end of the year! So head on over to cr2f.etsy.com!

Lindsay Handrich presents Young Living Essential Oils

Ever have one of those days where the whole family is stressed out, the house is a wreck, and you can feel a cold coming on and you wish there was something simple to sweep the rough edges away? Luckily, there is something simple and all natural that can do just that.

Essential oils are the distilled essences of botanicals like lavender, sage, and jasmine and have been revered for their therapeutic uses for thousands of years. The most respected essential oils company worldwide, Young Living, has been introducing the ancient traditions of their use to people for over 20 years, and we're lucky to have a YL independent distributor Lindsay Handrich here to guide us. Lindsay is one of the rare SoDu natives, born and raised right here in South Durham. She and her husband have three wonderful children (and are expecting their fourth in December) and have been using essential oils in their home for years. She chose Young Living "because they are the leading source of essential oil research and education in the world, and are the world's purest oils. We've used them on our small children from birth on, during pregnancy, and have had great results. I'm passionate about sharing them with the rest of the world and helping other moms and dads to use them safely too! I also offer bio-communication scans which is a great tool to help assess your body's needs. We host classes monthly and all are welcome!"

Young Living's essential oils have set the standard for purity and authenticity with their Seed to Seal process and rigorous quality controls. You can rest assured when you buy their products, knowing that you are actually getting what you pay for, the true liquid essence of botanicals, nothing diluted or contaminated with lesser ingredients. Young Living essential oils can be used in a myriad of ways, whatever works best for you: diffused, inhaled, applied topically, incorporated into massage, or taken internally.

So what are you waiting for?
If you are seeking peace, health, stamina, or more,
essential oils are amazing and Lindsay can show you the way!
So support a born and raised SoDu mom
and check out her site:

So if you're interested, no better time than the present to find out more! Lindsay will be graciously hosting an Intro to Essential Oils class this Thursday Nov 20th where she will also have Zyto scans available. A Zyto scan is an extremely accurate device that uses bio-feedback to determine which oils and supplements your body needs most.

So here's the amazing deal Lindsay is offering for SoDu Parents Posse members only: a free Quick Reference Guide ($20 value) and free Zyto bio-communication scan ($25 value) to anyone who purchases the Premium Starter Kit in November. (Or if you don't want the guide, Lindsay will reimburse your taxes and shipping.) And what's in the new starter kit? All of the oils pictured below plus a free home diffuser that’s pretty amazing and retails over $90! WOW!

Picture
I have personally always loved essential oils. I used them to relax while nursing, to energize so I could study on a cold winter morning (much like today) and most importantly, to heal. Thieves oil is my favorite. It was concocted based on stories of thieves in France who covered themselves with aromatics while robbing plague victims and so managed to stay healthy. Don't worry - it sounds spooky, but as long as you're not breaking any laws, you can benefit from their wicked ancient wisdom. ;) In the winter months my family applies it topically mixed with coconut oil and it keeps the bugs away, or if we're sick, it eases the worst symptoms and helps us get better, quicker. YL's proprietary Thieves blend contains clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary. It works and it smells amazing!
