I can help. Let me introduce you to Betsy. She is a lawyer, a mother, a community fundraiser, a writer and an athlete. And she's an invaluable resource to our community of parents as well as our city as a whole. A familiar face in the Durham area, she is engaged in the community and passionate about providing access to quality legal services at a reasonable cost. Betsy began offering basic estate planning after meeting too many fellow mothers and discovering they did not have the resources to access legal representation to fulfill their estate planning needs. Betsy began going to their homes (to avoid the need for childcare), in the evening (after work), and taking care of her community one family at a time. She continues to serve the community with basic estate planning, with small business and entrepreneur consultation, and a variety of other matters that arise in the course of life. If the topic is out of Betsy's practice areas, she always offers referrals and other resources to ensure each individual receives the legal care they seek. Betsy is an approachable resource, whom you can reach on her website or by finding her active on the posse boards, especially on posts about legal matters.
MORE ABOUT BETSY
Elizabeth “Betsy” Martin, graduated from UNC School of Law in 2002. Following two clerkships on the Court of Appeals, Betsy joined the law firm of Hatch, Little & Bunn, LLP. There, she practiced civil litigation, family law and appellate law, as well as taking a hiatus from the courtroom to assist in-house with Progress Energy. Following the birth of her oldest child in 2007, Betsy took a break from the practice of law to be a stay-at-home mother. In 2009, Betsy joined the Kochanek Law Group and practiced law part-time while also raising her two boys. With the Kochanek Law Group, Betsy offered counsel to small businesses and non-profits, assisted with legislative work, and developed a wills and trusts practice. Betsy continues her legal counseling work for individuals and small business owners and her practice of simple wills and trusts with Betsy Martin Law, PLLC, established in 2014.
HOW IT WORKS
"I come to your house, after you get your kids to sleep, and sit down with you and your spouse/partner (if any) and talk about your plans in the casual comfort of your home. There is no preparation needed for our first meeting, as we talk through about a 20 page document that I will leave with you to complete. With the answers in that document, I produce two wills, a family trust for care of minor children, durable powers of attorney, health care powers of attorney with living wills and medical authorizations for minor children. We then review and revise the documents by email and, once finalized, I come over one weekend or evening when you have some friends over to serve as witnesses and we sign the documents in a casual but happy “signing party!” In addition to making sure you have the legal documents you need, we also discuss and make sure you understand beneficial ways to hold assets and how to complete your beneficiary designations on your insurance policies and retirement accounts. I have a legacy binder we will compile to retain your legal documents, insurance and retirement information and other documents you want to have together should you or someone you love ever need them. I keep my rates low because I want good legal counsel to be available and affordable to my fellow moms. I come to your home to avoid the need for childcare and the intense experience of discussing such personal issues at a large mahogany table with someone in a suit. I find that moms respond well to my practice as I work hard to have this be an experience where I help take care of you as you take care of so much!"
“You are a gem! Despite the difficult subject matter, you managed to help us think through so much of this stuff clearly and pragmatically. I am so appreciative.”
I can think of no better person to help parents take care of such an important matter. Contact Betsy today!
