Massage Envy Spa at Southpoint

We give and give and give as mothers. Our bodies often don't even feel like our own, as we grow babies in our bellies and our back aches, as we nurse at all hours, or balance groceries and toddlers on our hip.  Even after those early days are over, mothers bodies are worn down by our 24-7 job as rewarding as it is, as we sit, crouched over for hours watching a swim meet and we contort our body to fit in our child's bed when they have a nightmare. So rarely do we get a moment to give thanks to our bodies, to repair them, to let ourselves relax. And I needed to do that. My whole body felt like a knot. I really needed to relax my muscles and my mind. Luckily when I walked in to Massage Envy Spa at Southpoint, I could tell I was in for a real escape and would leave feeling much better than when I arrived.

Massage Envy Spa at Southpoint has been a fixture of South Durham for years. Massage therapist and Chapel Hill native Cherry Gibbs opened Massage Envy at Southpoint in 2008, creating the perfect place for personalized, affordable, and relaxing massages from professionals in a spa atmosphere. Massage Envy Spa at Southpoint couldn't be more convenient. Not only is it close by, right next to Target, but it's also got really great hours. They open at 8am everyday but Sunday and don't close until 10pm, and have a treasure trove of talented massage therapists so you can always find an appointment time that suits your busy schedule. This means you can drop the kids off at school and treat yourself, or put them to bed and let your partner man the fort while you run off to relax at the end of a long day. I can't think of another business as flexible and accommodating as this.

I went in to Massage Envy Spa at Southpoint on a hot afternoon, worn out from the summer day. I was immediately greeted by staff and brought to a relaxing waiting area where I filled out my paperwork. Massage Envy is very thorough about making sure they are aware of any and all medical conditions and personal preferences. For example, I wanted a massage therapist who could mix light touch with deep tissue work, and I wanted someone who is a non-smoker and wouldn't be talking a lot during the massage. (How many times have you wanted to tell a hairstylist that you just want to relax instead of chit chat? Here you don't have to worry about it, just ask and ye shall receive!) Next the staff member came back in and went over my paperwork with me to make sure they knew me and my desires, then introduced me to my massage therapist. She took me to our room, and when I told her I was cold blooded (I can honestly shiver in hot weather), she not only turned off the AC but also turned on the heated massage table. I have been getting massages for years and had never had a heated massage table and it was HEAVEN! She also adjusted the music and lights to my requests after changing the massage began. Can I just say that it was one of the best massages of my life? She took her time with my problem areas and loosened all my tight muscles with fluid movements, combining firm kneading with gentle acupressure. It honestly felt like an out of body experience because it was just what I needed and wanted - not just a cookie cutter massage. Afterwards I toured the other relaxation areas of the building, where they offer showers, hairdryers and more so that people can leave feeling not only relaxed but refreshed and ready to face the rest of the day. It was hard to go when it was over, but alas, one cannot live on spa days alone!

Massage Envy Spa at Southpoint isn't just a local business, they're part of the community and give back hundreds of times throughout the year. Massage Envy Owner Cherry Gibbs here on the right, along with her staff, including manager Taiesha Smith on the left, support dozens upon dozens of Triangle charities, including Habitat for Humanity and Durham Parks and Recreation (both SoDu favorites), Girls on the Run, Dress For Success, Duke Children's Hospital, Triangle Independent Animal Rescue, and so many more. Their massage therapists often donate their time to work on athletes at portable chairs before and after charity races, showing that many hands make light work when it comes to making a difference.
Speaking of giving, the best gift I got after having my first born was a gift certificate for a massage. Is there a mom in your life who could use one? They'll appreciate it as much as (and possibly even more) other gifts because it's the gift of time and relaxation. You can even buy a gift card online or treat someone to a membership. Perhaps this is also an idea you can drop hints about with your spouse...

Honestly, it's about darn time to take care of yourself for a change, and you can do it right in your own backyard with a company that truly cares about our community.  The sky is the limit as far as what style of massage you want. They offer: Sports Massage, Swedish Massage, Reflexology, Deep Tissue Massage, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, Prenatal Massage, Geriatric Massage and more.
I can't leave off Hot Stone Envy - their signature service - which uses smooth, warm stones in a 1 1/2 hour customized massage therapy session to relax the body and allow better blood flow for a more even more soothing experience. Using hot stones gives the therapist easier access to the deeper muscle layers to relieve pain, increase metabolism and circulation, and experience a wonderful feeling of healthy relaxation. Hot stone massages are truly my favorite kind of massage - you have to try it, there's nothing like it.
You can also add on enhanced therapies to any massage session at Massage Envy. Those include:
  • AromaTherapy: Ease anxiety, improve circulation, and even promote restful sleep with one of four unique oil blends
  • Sugar Foot Scrub Therapy: Relax and relieve aches in your feet
  • Deep Muscle Therapy: Experience the relief of therapeutic warming ointment and relaxing cooling gel

That's not all! Durham's Massage Envy Spa also offers Murad® Healthy Skin facials to improve your skin texture, tone and appearance. They also offer a wide variety of spa items for purchase, from muscle roller balls to skincare products, so that you can continue the experience at home between sessions. No matter what your preference - or even if you're not sure what you want - their professional massage therapists and estheticians will work with you to customize your session just for you.

Just in case you think you don't deserve to be pampered, it's important to note that getting a massage isn't just me-time to relax, but it's also proven to be medically beneficial. Study after study has shown that massage therapy can have many positive benefits, including improving circulation, lowering blood pressure, correcting poor posture, relaxing muscles, improving flexibility and range of motion, promoting deeper breathing, relieving headaches, strengthening the immune system, enhancing post operative and post injury rehabilitation. Even a single massage session can lower heart rate, cortisol, and insulin levels. We all know that stress is a killer, it's hard on the heart and the mind. Massage therapy can help.
