Sun Star director Heidi Watkins grew up on a farm in South Africa, and later studied child psychology in Southern California while putting herself through university as a governess. After settling in Durham, her little ones experienced a week of summer camp in a home nursery inspired by Waldorf Early Education philosophy. Heidi and her children loved it and she soon embraced peaceful parenting techniques that focus on cooperation and mutual respect rather than a dominant paradigm. After moving to Sun Star Farm, in 2011 she set up "Sun Star Farm Childrens Nursery" and has grown the program ever since. Now a mother of three, Heidi believes in the magic and wonder of childhood and keeping it simple. Less is more. Nothing pleases her more than children's pure joy from doing the simplest things. Heidi delights in and enjoys engaging children in all facets of life. Her husband, Don, started www.JordanLakeBoatingCamp.com for ages 7-14, a summer day camp full of motorboating, sailing, fishing, kayaking and more. The Watkins family strives to immerse all children in the outdoors - the best schoolroom there is!
We welcome children who enjoy and need lots of outdoor time. Storytelling, puppetry, singing, water play, crafting from natural materials, gardening, bread baking, farm animal care and more…will fuel your child's imagination!
Summer Camp is a great way for new children to get to know Miss Heidi, Sun Star Farm, and some of the other new and returning children. A delicious organic snack and organic popsicle is provided everyday. Children should bring a lunch from home. Other useful things to bring are a towel, bathing suit (for water play only, no swimming), a complete change of clothes, sunscreen, bug repellent, and a hat (all labeled and in a backpack please). The indoors has a wonderful waldorf schoolroom with many toys and a gentle, welcoming atmosphere.
All Camp weeks have lots of animal care and interaction, yet each week has a different theme and educational component. Some of the camp themes are Gardening, Insects and Critters, Fiber Arts, Fairies and Knomes, Horses and Llamas, Chickens and Ducks, Goats and Pigs, Bunnies and Guinea Pigs, Food Art, and Mud & Clay! Oh, and Caramel and Cocoa, their resident cows gave birth to 2 calves at the beginning of the year. Petunia had her twin baby goats a month ago, and our new sheep had her first lamb a week ago. More horses. Great things being built down in the forest. It will be a fantastical summer!

"My daughter attends Sun Star Family Nursery and she truly blossoms there. On our way home she has so many stories to tell me about seeing the llamas, the bunnies and the chickens, helping to make snacks, playing in the wooden boat and singing. She loves the storytime circle too. I can see that she is learning many daily skills through watching Heidi, playing with friends, and being in nature. I love Heidi's approach which models caring relationships, environmental stewardship, appreciating the simple everyday joys of life and a love of the outdoors. She is also artistically gifted and does beautiful crafts with the kids."
