Acrobatics, Contortions, Tumbling, Human Pyramids, and Chair Balancing… and you can take your kids to see this in person right over in Carrboro... for cheap! Sound too good to be true? Well direct from Mombasa, Kenya, the Jabali African Acrobats are an all-male group of phenomenal performers that combine fast paced movement, music, dance, and daring acrobatic feats to create a thrilling, high-energy show. And they're bringing these skills to The ArtsCenter next weekend, at 11am on Saturday April 18th so you can witness how the acrobatic performance turns to dance, revel in the Congo Snake Dance, be amazed by the Flaming Limbo Bar Dance, be wowed by the Skip Rope Footwork techniques, and laugh and dance to the comedy and electrifying music. Bonus: audience participation is always a part of their act!

Learn more about them at www.class-act.com/acts/JabaliAcrobats!

Elska at the ArtsCenter

Hiddi hiddi! (That’s how to say hello on the Island of Elska... but I'll get to that in a minute!)

Back in my pre-mom days, I used to work in Carrboro, and loved the small town vibe. What I miss most is The ArtsCenter, which is truly the heart of Carrboro. The ArtsCenter began in 1974 and is a unique not-for-profit place for concerts, classes, residencies and community support of the arts. Over the years I've seen bands, slam poets, and improv comedians there, and now that I've had kids, many a SuperFun Show.  The ArtsCenter’s SuperFun Series is a group of family friendly performances held on the weekends. As they say, "SuperFun Shows are a great way for kids to have fun, discover, and experience something new in a laid-back, family-friendly setting." The shows may be plays, music shows, storytelling, or something that defies categorization from both local and international acts, and are geared toward pre-K to elementary school age children. Past shows have included sold-out performances by acclaimed "kindie" rock star Justin Roberts and folk musician Elizabeth Mitchell, as well as Triangle favorites Rags To Riches Theatre for Young Audiences, Lunch Money, Gustafer Yellowgold, and Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets. There is no better way to spend quality time with your family than opening their eyes to the wonder of art, and the pop show this upcoming weekend is definitely full of wonder!

So here's the magical music show happening on Saturday! The Island of Elska is the imaginary volcanic island off the coast of Iceland that is home to the singer Elska and a cast of quirky characters, including her two-foot-tall best friend the Goobler, a mysterious Arctic Fox, a pensive Winter Bear and a vast colony of Lost Socks. Her award-winning debut album, Middle of Nowhere, is packed with kid-friendly modern pop songs rendered in a spell-binding blend of vibraphones, chimes, bells, twinkling analog synthesizers and one of the most endearing and lovely voices in family entertainment. Live on stage, Elska combines theatre, storytelling, and musical performance in order to whisk away children and families on a musical tour of her Arctic home.

The below music video about the Arctic Fox is adorable and quirky - scroll down after it for info on the show and the promo code!

Elska's shows are a mix of the whimsy of Winnie the Pooh and the otherworldliness of Dr. Seuss,
and the combination creates a playful, sparkling soundscape that casts a spell over the audience, drawing them into Elska’s amazing world.

“Elska is crazy awesome electronic funderworld faerie tunes for the whole family.”
- Mike Jorgensen, Wilco
